1. Teacher-directed instruction is when the teacher does the majority of the teaching and plans what the students will learn (Ormrod & Jones, 2018). On the other hand, student-directed instruction is when the students have control on what they will learn (Ormrod & Jones, 2018). When it comes to deciding whether you will have a teacher-directed or student-directed classroom, you must consider your students prior knowledge and the goals that should be met.
As a future teacher, I will be using both teacher and student-directed instruction. In the beginning of the school year, it will be mostly teacher-directed instruction because I need to learn the way my students learn. I need to analyze what they already know and use that to determine when they can start to begin student-directed instruction. Once I allow student-directed instruction, it will give the students a sense of freedom and responsibility. Freedom in that they have the choices, but responsibility because although they have the “ropes,” they still need to be diligently learning. It is exciting when you can let your students have control because it shows the amount of trust that has been built in the classroom.
