Chapter 3 focuses on the direct push for English settlers to establish long-term settlements in North America. Each colonial group had different motivations, however, their intent on staying for the indefinite future was concrete. Cultural contact with Native Americans will be a common theme, as we often lack a deep understanding of the severity of European conquest. For instance, let us analyze the conflict between the English and the Powhatan’s. 

Do you think the English would have treated the French king’s family the same way they treated the Powhatan’s chief’s family? Why would there be a difference if any?
